WHEN THE "PEER REVIEW" IS A NON-SENSE.

Renato Cocchi, MD.

(Italian translation)

What it is called "peer review" is a system of judgment about of a new article, sent for consideration to a scientific journal.

Its purpose, a praiseworthy one, is that of doing a judgement of this article, in an anonymous way, by two notorious experts on the matter of the article, proposed for publication.

It is sure that when the article is only amplification, or a replica, of actual mainstream knowledge, the Peer Review may act in suitable way. So to avoid that articles of poor weigh, or of incorrect methodologically, can reach the publication in journals that pretend to maintain an elevated qualitative level of their contents.

Different is its efficiency when its methodological ground is totally unusual as that pointed up in the index page of this site, and here reported:

Every illness is always a compromise between an offence ability (the causal agent ) and a very personal resistance ability, in a given moment of the biological cycle of a living body. The resistance ability goes even throughout the reactions of stress.

Then it may happen that an article as: Selective mutism and Down syndrome in a 15-years-old person: Is this the first case report? (www.stress-cocchi.net/Down41.htm) what is surely the first described case of this association, was rejected.

When posted in the actual site, such an article received a series to confirmations for the new way to appraise an evolutionary difficulty, all other that infrequent, of the language of the Down. By ignoring this approach type and faced with a content so new, the Peer Review rejected it because it did its work, which is only the defence of mainstreaming.

It seems that it is not a new problem. Ed Folman, on the Walt Whitman Quarterly Review, by picking up a stitch indication of the same Walt Whitman, wrote expressly that if a poet writes not conformist things that want to question the people's thoughts he would need to publish them by his same. ( Quoted from Buzzi E. Whitman: Ragazzi non scrivete poesia. Il Corriere della Sera, 20 agosto 2005, pag. 29).

Then it is not only a problem of poetry. So it happened for that article and it is one worth of internet to do the permission of a well wider diffusion.
