SARS PREVENTION - A letter to Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, WHO Director-General,

Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, WHO Director-General,

your words, pronounced in Rome, represent a useless and wrong health terrorism. It seems that SARS affected people is dieing like flies. Instead the evidence shows the contrary, and for actual mortality nearly 6%, there are 94% persons who could defend themselves and escape the illness. For which, differently to what you have said, or the saints Cosma and Damian protect us, or there are yet defences against the SARS.

It is not a point of view like that on the famous half-filled glass. Here are 94% against 6%.

The human organism then, in mostly cases, defends from the virus and to tell the opposite is a rough medical error, unexpected for the WHO Director-General.

Surely there are not specific defences. The organism does not own previous antibodies because this virus is completely new.

But it works the cell-mediated non specific immunity, which pivots on that fraction of white blood cells named lymphocytes.

If want to have an analogy with the computer, it works as the so-called program "Firewall," which is a not specific program against electronic viruses. It is a software that cannot protect to 100%, but it gives a large protection, as our own non specific immunity does against the true viruses.

You would say me: Yes, however even if they are only 6%, they are many to die of it. That is true, and if this percentage could be reduced, it would be better.

Now, we have two cases, or the virus chooses at random anyone who has to die, or they die because they are more fragile. On the 24 April of the Italian newspaper Il Giornale, among the suggestions for the SARS prevention, the fifth one, advices to avoid stress situations, both in general, or locally as it happens for smoking for the lungs).

These are right suggestions, because the stress lowers the not specific immunity, via cortisol immuno suppression.

I do not need that I remember you that every illness is always a compromise between an offence ability ( the present virus, in our case) and a defence ability (here, the cell-mediated immunity, since we have to do with an infection).

If is the first one stronger, the illness will drive to death, if the second is stronger, we will have the recovery.

Today, we could not still control the virus, both with specific antibiotics or with a specific vaccine, and this is what you said, as WHO Director-General. But we can avoid jeopardizing the cell-mediated immunity (suggestion for general prevention) or we can rightly strengthen one's own not specific immunity.

This assertion doesn't have to surprise, because in pass physicians exactly did this for the tuberculosis, already considered an illness that did not let any escape from death.

In the pre-sulphamide and pre-antibiotic era, there were not drugs killing the tuberculosis bacterium, and the Calmette-Guerin's vaccine was only preventive.

When the illness was overtly doing its course, the physicians acted on the individual resistance, with the tool of the Sanatoria. Sun, pure air, hygiene, suitable diet, calm (that is stress avoiding), sociability gave notable results.

Then sulphamides first and antibiotics as second ones, both more effective, moved the application point of the therapy, from the increase of the individual resistance to the disappearance of the bacterium. Moreover, they costed much less, for which the sanatoria went down and eventually were closed.

This great medical lesson has been forgotten even from you, but it was not wrong. Today can do better in this field, in more exact way, and with lower costs. We may increase the blood white cells' production, with their lymphocytes' fraction.

In my pioneer work of the 1981, (Cocchi R. Susceptibility to infective respiratory diseases in depressed children. Epidemiological survey of 126 subjects, clinical therapeutic report of 61 cases. Acta psychiat. Belg. 1981,81:350-365. See: www.truehope.com/disorders/depression/3_1_6_4_52.asp) I reached an evident clinical datum. There I brought also to light the role of the glutamine, one of the drugs I used, as the exclusive donor of atoms for the proteins and nucleic acids building.

As reported by Stryer (Stryer L. Biochemistry. Freeman & Co., New York 1988) study text for Medical School students, the glutamine is the exclusive donor of the nitrogen atoms 3 and 9 of the purine nucleus, the glycine of the nitrogen atom 7, the tetrahydrofolates of the nitrogen atoms 2 and 8, and the aspartate of the nitrogen atom 1.

The purine nucleus is in the base of nucleic acids and then even of the nucleus of blood whit cells, which are what we are interested in. Already the glutamine works very well by herself, in the production increasing of blood white cells, and not only according to my over two decades experience (see: www.stress-cocchi.org/immunity.htm, and specifically www.stress-cocchi.org/Drugs5.htm and www.stress-cocchi.org/Immunity2.htm, with many references to this topic)

If think that I am speaking about an anecdotal experience, during the VI International Congress on amino acids (Bonn, 1999) there was a dedicated session on the immuno modulatory effects of the amino acids, to which I participated. The immuno modulatory activity of the glutamine received there even many experimental confirmations (summaries in www.stress-cocchi.org/Drugs2.htm).

If you want to collect further proofs, with the search engine Google you can look for "glutamine, immunity" or on Medscape, look on the Medline database with the same two key words.

This means that there is information, but at the moment this is not mainstreaming - in my case, I was not into the mainstream since 1981-, for which information does not circulate.

As for Italy the glutamine is regularly marketed, as tetrahydrofolates and the glycine, for which, if one wants it, one can already start prevention by increasing the not specific cell-mediated immunity. They are 3 substances that are taken by the oral via.

According to these reasons you dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, WHO Director-General said a scientifically partial information but a very health terroristic one.

Best regards
